TRANSIT TARGET SELECTION USING REDUCED PROPER MOTIONS AndrewGould and ChristopherW.Morgan

چکیده

In searches for planetary transits in the field, well over half of the survey stars are typically giants or other stars that are too large to permit straightforward detection of planets. For all-sky searches of bright Vd11 stars, the fraction is 90%. We show that the great majority of these contaminants can be removed from the sample by analyzing their reduced proper motions (RPMs); giants have much lower RPMs than dwarfs of the same color. We useHipparcos data to design a RPM selection function that eliminates most evolved stars, while rejecting only 9% of viable transit targets. Our method can be applied using existing or soon-to-bereleased all-sky data to stars V < 12:5 in the northern hemisphere and V < 12 in the southern hemisphere. Themethod degrades at fainter magnitudes, but does so gracefully. For example, atV 1⁄4 14 it can still be used to eliminate giants redward ofV I 0:95, that is, the blue edge of the red giant clump. A catalogue of bright ( K < 9 ) M dwarfs

Using the Position and Proper Motion Extended-L (PPMXL) catalogue, we have used optical and near-infrared colour cuts together with a reduced proper motion cut to find bright M dwarfs for future exoplanet transit studies. PPMXL’s low proper motion uncertainties allow us to probe down to smaller proper motions than previous similar studies. We have combined unique objects found with this method ...

GENERATION OF OPTIMIZED SPECTRUM COMPATIBLE NEAR-FIELD PULSE-LIKE GROUND MOTIONS USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The existence of recorded accelerograms to perform dynamic inelastic time history analysis is of the utmost importance especially in near-fault regions where directivity pulses impose extreme demands on structures and cause widespread damages. But due to the scarcity of recorded acceleration time histories, it is common to generate proper artificial ground motions. In this paper an alternative ...

Selection of Optimal Intensity Measure for Seismic Assessment of Steel Buckling Restrained Braced Frames under Near-Fault Ground Motions

Buckling restrained braces (BRBs) have a similar behavior under compression and tension loadings. Therefore, they can be applied as a favorable lateral load resisting system for structures. In the performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) framework, an intermediate variable called intensity measure (IM) links the seismic hazard analysis with the structural response analyses. An optimal IM...
